Comvita Manuka Honey UMF 5+ arrives in a 500g jar and is one of the most widely recognised certified manuka honeys on the market. Comvita has been working with New Zealand beekeepers since 1974 and operates its own UMF grading and traceability programme, which is why its jars carry a licence number that can be checked back to the batch.

Where Comvita Manuka Honey UMF 5+ sits in the range

UMF 5+ is the entry grade in the manuka scale. It is genuine monofloral manuka, tested and certified, but with a lower methylglyoxal reading than the 10+ and 15+ jars. In practice that makes it milder in flavour, softer in texture and a good deal easier on the budget, which is why it tends to be the grade people choose for everyday use rather than occasional spoonfuls.

Flavour and how to use it

Smoother and more spreadable than higher grades, with a gentle caramel character and only a hint of the sharper medicinal note that stronger manuka carries. The 500g jar is generous enough to use like an ordinary table honey: on toast, over porridge, through natural yoghurt, or stirred into warm water with lemon. Very hot liquid will loosen the texture, so let a drink cool a moment first.

Checking the certification

Every jar in the UMF programme carries a licence number printed on the label. That number identifies the packer and allows the honey to be traced back through the supply chain to its batch. It is worth a glance when the jar arrives, as the licence number is the practical difference between certified manuka and honey merely labelled as such.

Storage and cautions

Store sealed at room temperature away from sunlight, and always use a dry spoon, since water introduced into the jar will spoil honey. Granulation over time is normal in manuka and is not a fault. As with every honey, it is not suitable for infants under twelve months old. This is a food product rather than a medicine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Comvita Manuka Honey UMF 5+?
A: Comvita Manuka Honey UMF 5+ is a 500g jar of certified New Zealand manuka honey. It is smooth, spreadable and mild, which suits daily use on toast, porridge or in warm drinks.
Q: What is manuka honey?
A: Manuka honey is honey produced by bees foraging on the manuka bush, Leptospermum scoparium, which is native to New Zealand. It is thicker and more strongly flavoured than most table honeys, and is graded by certification systems that ordinary honey is not.
Q: What does UMF 5+ mean?
A: UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor, a grading and certification system operated by licensed New Zealand producers. The number reflects the concentration of manuka markers present. UMF 5+ is an entry grade — certified manuka, milder in flavour than higher grades.
Q: How do you use Comvita Manuka Honey?
A: Use it as you would any honey — spread on toast, stirred into porridge or yoghurt, or added to warm drinks. Avoid stirring it into boiling liquid. Its mild, smooth character makes it well suited to everyday use rather than being reserved for the spoon.
Q: What is the difference between UMF 5+ and UMF 10+ manuka honey?
A: The difference is grade and flavour intensity. UMF 5+ is milder, smoother and more spreadable, which is why this 500g jar suits daily use. UMF 10+ carries a higher methylglyoxal rating and a deeper, more pronounced malty character, and is usually sold in smaller jars.
Q: How should manuka honey be stored?
A: Store the jar sealed at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat. Honey does not need refrigerating. Use a clean, dry spoon each time, as introducing moisture into the jar can affect the honey over time.
Q: Who should not eat manuka honey?
A: Manuka honey is honey, so it is not suitable for infants under twelve months. Avoid it if you are allergic to bees or bee products. If you have diabetes or take prescribed medication, bear in mind that honey is a sugar and speak to your doctor if unsure.
