Organic Ceremonial Grade Matcha | 30g | Japanese Green Tea Powder
Organic Ceremonial Matcha, stone-ground in Japan from shade-grown green tea leaves. A 30g tin, roughly 30 servings. Whisk with hot water at 80°C, or use as the base of a latte. Suitable for vegans.
This Ceremonial Matcha is stone-ground Japanese green tea powder, certified organic, in a 30g tin.
The whole leaf, not an infusion.
Ordinary green tea is steeped and then thrown away, which means you drink only what dissolves. Matcha is different: the leaf is stone-ground to a powder and whisked into the water, so you consume the leaf itself. That is the entire reason it looks, tastes and behaves so differently from a teabag.
Ceremonial grade is the top tier — young leaves from the first harvest, shade-grown for several weeks before picking, with stems and veins removed before milling. It is smooth and faintly sweet rather than bitter, which is why it is meant to be drunk with water alone. Culinary grade, the cheaper tier, is sharper and made for baking and lattes where sugar and milk cover it.
What is in it
- 30g tin, approximately 30 servings at 1g each
- Ceremonial grade, first harvest
- Organic and stone-ground
- 100% green tea powder — nothing added, no sugar, no filler
- Suitable for vegans and vegetarians
Ingredients: 100% organic green tea powder (matcha).
How to prepare it
- Sift 1 to 2g into a bowl — matcha clumps, and sifting is the step most people skip and then regret.
- Add around 60ml of water at roughly 80°C. Not boiling, which scorches the powder and turns it bitter.
- Whisk briskly in a W or M motion for fifteen to twenty seconds until a fine foam forms.
- For a latte, use the same base and top with 150ml of steamed milk or oat milk.
Storing it
Matcha fades with light, heat and air. Keep the tin sealed, somewhere cool and dark, and use it within a couple of months of opening — the colour is the giveaway, as it dulls from bright green towards khaki as it ages.
Good to know
Contains naturally occurring caffeine. Not recommended for children, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding you may wish to moderate your caffeine intake — speak to your doctor if you are unsure. Store in a cool, dry place out of the reach of young children.
More about this Ceremonial Matcha
Ordinary green tea is steeped and the leaf discarded, so you drink only what dissolves. Matcha is the whole leaf, ground to a powder and whisked into the water, which is why the cup is opaque and vividly green rather than clear. Ceremonial grade refers to the younger leaves used and the finer grind.
Whisk about a teaspoon into water at roughly 80°C rather than boiling, which scalds the powder and turns the cup bitter. The 30g tin is the right size for finding out whether matcha suits your routine. Keep it sealed in the fridge once opened, as matcha loses colour and aroma quickly when exposed to air and light.
